Damn if you will, damn if don’t
July 20, 2006
You are in a raft which could only accomodate 2 people. You see your aunt and uncle in the ocean drowning. Who would you save? That's a typical Catch 22 situation. By definition, Catch 22 is a problematic situation for which the only solution is denied by a circumstance inherent in the problem or by a rule. It is presenting two equally undesirable alternatives. A more realistic example is when you can't get hired for jobs because you have no experience, but you can't gain experience unless you get a job. Basically, Catch 22 is "heads I win, tails you lose." Stephen Covey preaches to have a win-win situation. But that is not probable for this scenario. So given a Catch 22 case, what would you do? As for me, I will tell you when I've crossed the bridge.
